Abaco Real Estate

The Abaco islands are the most northern of the Bahamian island groups. They are located about 170 miles east of West Palm Beach Florida and 75 miles north of Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. The “mainland” island is surrounded by dozens of much smaller islands and cays, all of which are brimming with clear turquoise oceans, gorgeous beaches (National Geographic magazine declared Abaco’s Treasure Cay as ‘one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world’), and, of course, distinctively Abaco real estate galore.

Abaco has a yet-to-be-discovered feel, even given the fact that the island chain is the self-declared sailing capital of the Bahamas (and the fact that Disney has recently bought one of the outlying islands as their cruise-ship worthy Castaway Island). The island chain only has a population of 14,000 permanent residents, although the numbers do climb a bit during migration season, when vacationers move down to their second homes in the area.

Yet in an area that boasts ‘all of the above’ on its ample island space, in addition to a 20,000 acre National Forest Reserve, one of the largest fresh-water reserves in the Bahamas, the third largest barrier reef in the world, and a “New England charm” in a tropical locale, Abaco real estate is still plentiful and relatively inexpensive. Home sites are available on one of the many hundred-acre properties currently being developed. These include Schooner Bay, the largest acreage up for sale on the island; Lantern Head, on a point with views of the Hole-in-the-Wall lighthouse, the first lighthouse to be built by Bahama’s Imperial Lighthouse Service in the late 1800’s; a 50-acre extension of Abaco’s bustling port town Marsh Harbour; and Bakers Heights, a pine-forest development with hilltop views of the Sea of Abaco.

There are also single-acre, beachfront lots available for purchase on many of the surrounding Abaco islands such as Green Turtle Cay, Bita Bay and the aforementioned Treasure Cay, with its beautifully impressive white-sand beaches.

If you are looking for acreage for sale with a house attached – the perfect thing for snowbirds who want to escape the winter weather – there are also many houses and vacation cottages available for sale, both by owner and by real estate agent. Many of these homes already come with dockage space, and homes can be found to sleep as many friends and family as you could want. Ask your agent about more Abaco real estate options.
